Travel Information for Post-16 Students

This information relates students who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and are in Year 12, Year 13 and sometimes Year 14 (for students who are under 19 on 31st August, immediately preceding the start of the academic year).

1. Applications are open

Applications for Post-16 Home to School Transport (HTST) are now open. It is important to apply as soon as possible and provide as much information as possible. Apply here: www.n-somerset.gov.uk/hometoschooltransport

The form requires you to choose an option to complete the application. If none of the options meet the needs of your child, please pick the closest suitable option. The HTST team will take up to 20 working days to notify families with a decision.

If the option provided by North Somerset Council is not suitable, you will be given an opportunity to appeal. This must be completed within 20 working days.

2. North Somerset Post-16 Travel Options

This year, North Somerset Council are offering the following options:

  • A public bus or train pass

  • Direct Response Travel e.g. Westlink

  • Cycling or Biking Allowance

  • Independent travel training (on its own or in conjunction with another travel option)

  • Personal Travel Allowances that can be used in multiple different ways

**Bespoke travel arrangements which are not listed above will be reviewed on a case by case basis**

3. What if the option provided does not meet my child’s needs?

If the travel option provided does not meet your child’s needs you can appeal directly to the HTST team. This a two part process. If you are not satisfied with the the outcome of stage one, you can proceed to stage two. Information about how to do this will be provided when you reply back to your decision notification.

You must appeal your decision using the HTST team process first. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you can also make a complaint to the Council about the service provided, using the general complaints process:

4. Bursaries and Additional Support

Some students studying at a publicly funded school or college, or those on a training course (including unpaid work experience), could be eligible for a bursary. For more information, go to www.gov.uk/1619-bursary-fund.
